A lot of the work carried out by private investigators is done ‘in person’ – we would carry out surveillance or interviewing personally, in order to gather the information or evidence we need for a case we’ve taken on.
One area where that isn’t practical is vehicle tracking. It’s not like in the movies where you can stake out a car, wait for the driver to climb in, and then follow it from a safe distance.
Thankfully we have the technology to allow us to track vehicles remotely. But why? What does vehicle tracking offer as a service?
Let’s take a look.
Protection Of Your Asset
If you’re lucky enough to own a nice car, then you’re going to want to make sure it stays safe. And that might involve making sure nobody is borrowing it without permission. We don’t mean theft – more on that below – but it could be a family member or a work colleague that just helps themselves to your car keys.
Of course, it can be hard to catch them in the act if they know your schedule and you’re a busy person, especially if you were going away on holiday or a business trip for a few days. They might have access to your car with little you can do to stop them.
But if you know that there’s a chance of this happening, you could hire us to plant a GPS logger on your car, somewhere that it wouldn’t be noticed. GPS loggers are relatively cheap, because they work by only recording the data for their location. They don’t transmit it anywhere.
So, you can’t track your vehicle live as it’s happening, but once we retrieve the logger and download the information, you’ll be able to see exactly where the car has been.
And if it has been taken without your permission, you can look at the location it was taken to and probably work out who took it. Normally with a family member or colleague, if you can present evidence proving they did something wrong, they’re too burned to try it again.
Theft Prevention
Taking things up a notch, if you have a particularly expensive car then you may want to go the extra mile to prevent it from being stolen while you are not in the area. A GPS logger is no use here because this only tells you where the car has been once you’ve removed the logger. Not many car thieves steal a car to bring it back.
We do have live trackers that we can use instead, but the service is more expensive. That’s why we’d suggest it’s only for anyone with a premium or luxury car that has an extremely high value, or that doesn’t have anywhere safe to keep their car while they are away.
It’s also definitely more of a short-term measure. If you want to constantly monitor the location of your car, then you would want to buy your own tracker instead.
But with our service, we could plant a GPS tracker on your car during your trip, and then if the car moves we’d know exactly where it was and could keep you updated, and work with you to involve the police if necessary.
Cheating Spouse
Unfortunately, one of the most effective uses of vehicle tracking is to help collect evidence if your spouse is cheating on you.
Using a GPS logger, placed discreetly on the car, you can later find out exactly where they’ve been driving to. If those ‘late nights in the office’ are actually trips to hotels or the house of a ‘friend’ then you might be able to start piecing together what’s really happening.
